WEIPA AND SURROUNDS

BIRD OF THE DAY - PAPUAN FROGMOUTH!

Today was an opportunity to explore some of the habitat types around Weipa. We explored some of the tidal marshes, northern savanna woodlands, melaleuca forest and mangroves plus some freshwater lakes. We saw some 96 species of bird today so our cumulative total climbed to just over one hundred; 104 to be exact.

After breakfast, we drove northwards for 20 or so kilometres and took a walk through some woodland that had been relatively recently burned.

After an ill fated drive down the Pennefather Road achieved little except introducing all to some horrid roads and seeing our first Emu!

Lunching by the lake meant visiting many of the same species seen yesterday however there were even more Pied Herons and the Swamp Harrier turned up.

After a little post lunch lie-in we recovered to visit some nearby Mangroves and the Sewerage Ponds.
Red headed Honeyeater

Red headed Honeyeaters were a highlight as was Yellow breasted Broadbill. The Sewerage Ponds produced good numbers and variety of waders plus stilts and Rajah Shelducks.
