AROUND WEIPA

BIRD OF THE DAY - RED HEADED HONEYEATER!
The last day of our tour involved a little look around the Weipa area.

We started with a quick look at a nearby conservation reserve which features a mix of Melaleuca forest and mangrove. We saw a nice mix of birds with the best being Red headed Honeyeater. This turned out to be the  BIRD OF THE DAY!

Next was a trip north of Weipa towards the Wenlock River. The highlight for me was a bit of birding in open Eucalypt woodland which had been relatively recently been burned. The best bird, for me, was the Brown Treecreeper. The Cape York race melanotis is a very distinctive form being almost black backed. So nearly a lifer....

There was a good mix of species here including Grey Shrike thrush, White winged Triller, Red winged Parrots and a fly by of Black breasted Buzzard to name a few.

We had lunch in the small town of Maroom and then drifted back to Weipa before finishing the day early before our final dinner - a three course affair at our accommodation.
